New online module for Civil Protection and Disaster Management Staff

By Knowledge Network – Staff memberPublished on

A new online training course was launched to support National Civil Protection and DM Staff in understanding the UCPM and its functioning.

September marks the first anniversary of the new UCPM Training Programme. As we celebrate the occasion and all the achievements of the past year, now with a dynamic training and exercises programme in place tailored to specific target groups, a new online training module has just been launched – the Mechanism Introduction Course for National Civil Protection and Disaster Management Staff (NAT).

The NAT online module was designed to support disaster management authorities at all levels (ministries, armed forces, police, health services, etc.) and personnel from international/regional/disaster management organisations in understanding the specificities of the UCPM and its functioning. The course also focuses on the process of requesting and receiving assistance and the roles expected from different actors.

The NAT online training module is freely accessible on EU Academy, the Commission’s learning management system, and offers a comprehensive learning journey through seven units delivered asynchronously. Upon completion of this online module, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the role of the European Union in Disaster Management
  • Identify the structure and main strategic and operational actors of the UCPM
  • List the benefits of UCPM actions in the field of prevention, preparedness and response
  • Recognise the options and tools of the UCPM and its added value for EU Member States, UCPM Participating States and third countries
  • Explain the specific role of the various actors involved in a response
  • Understand the concept and identify main elements of Host Nation Support
  • Understand the EU Host Nation Support (HNS) Guidelines
  • Recognise the importance of cultural competences in an international environment
  • Understand how participants can contribute individually to the UCPM
  • Identify the participant’s possible contribution to the UCPM and further opportunities within the UCPM

The UCPM Training Programme helps to increase the UCPM response capability and better prepare for disasters and supplements the national training offer provided to civil protection and disaster management personnel by their countries and organisations.
