Pre-FACED officially kicks off to strengthen wildfire and flood preparedness across Europe
The Pre-FACED project has officially launched, bringing together nine partner organisations in a collaborative European initiative to enhance preparedness, risk assessment and emergency response to wildfires and floods.
Coordinated by the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence (ECoE) in Cyprus, Pre-FACED is a 24-month project co-funded by the European Union under the Union Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM), with the support of the European Commission's Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG ECHO).
The kick-off meeting provided an opportunity for project partners to align on the project's objectives, planned activities and implementation priorities, while establishing a common understanding of the technical developments and demonstration activities ahead.
At the heart of Pre-FACED is the development of an integrated Decision Support System (DSS) and Common Operational Picture (COP), bringing together Earth Observation, geospatial information, Artificial Intelligence (AI), advanced flood and wildfire modelling, and UAV-derived data. The platform aims to support civil protection authorities with improved situational awareness, risk assessment and evidence-based decision-making.
The project will focus on demonstration activities in Cyprus, Greece and Portugal, addressing different operational needs and strengthening cooperation between technical partners, researchers and civil protection stakeholders.
Through its activities, Pre-FACED aims to contribute to more effective disaster preparedness, early warning, risk-informed planning and coordinated emergency management, supporting the wider objectives of the Union Civil Protection Mechanism.
The kick-off meeting marks the beginning of a shared effort to translate innovative technologies and scientific knowledge into practical tools for civil protection authorities.
