Description

The growing intensity and frequency of wildfires, largely driven by climate change, is creating one of the most urgent disaster risks across Europe. In recent years, the continent has experienced some of its most destructive wildfire seasons, highlighting the need for urgent and coordinated action, especially in cross-border regions . These challenges are even more pronounced in cross-border regions, where differing national systems and lack of coordination often lead to fragmented prevention efforts and delayed responses. The mountainous border area shared by Kosovo^, Albania, and Montenegro is particularly vulnerable due to a combination of climate stress, socio-economic pressures, and institutional limitations. Despite the proximity and shared risks, the three countries operate with inconsistent fire risk assessments, outdated early warning systems, and limited joint response mechanisms. Communities in this region remain exposed to escalating wildfire threats. KOMOAL-PREP aims to address these challenges by strengthening wildfire risk management and enhancing cross-border cooperation between the three countries. The project will improve fire risk assessment methodologies, develop shared early warning and early action systems, and foster joint response planning. It will also engage local communities through awareness campaigns and training, ensuring that prevention and preparedness efforts are inclusive and grounded in local realities. By integrating lessons from recent EU-funded initiatives and addressing the specific needs of vulnerable populations, KOMOAL-PREP will create a more coordinated, resilient, and community-engaged model for wildfire prevention and response. This collaborative effort will not only reduce wildfire risks but also serve as a replicable approach for other cross-border regions facing similar threats.
