The overall objective of this work is to assist Greek authorities in improving their wildfire risk management capabilities and to identify better approaches to policy and operations. It also facilitates an exchange of good practices among stakeholders involved in wildfire risk management in Greece.
The in-country mission for the peer review of Greece’s wildfire risk management system took place from 29 January to 2 February, 2024. The main counterparts for the peer review were the General Secretariat of Civil Protection (under the Ministry for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection), the Hellenic Fire Corps, and the Ministry of Environment and Energy. The chosen topics of the review were: governance of wildfire risk management, prevention, preparedness, and response.
The selected team of peers included experts from Spain (from the FAST team) Portugal (from AGIF), France (from Securité Civile), Norway (firefighting expert), and OECD (from the Governance division).
Discussions involved more than 30 stakeholders including national authorities, agencies, academia and research institutes, and WWF (World Wild Fund for Nature). Regional and local authorities and services were also represented.
Supported by the Commission and the technical consultant CMCC (Euro-Mediterranean Center for Climate Change) the peers are now preparing a report that, in addition to giving an overview of the situation, will identify good practices and recommendations for improvement, based on desk research and the many discussions and meetings held during the review mission. The report is expected to be published by May 2024.
A UCPM peer review of disaster risk management systems is carried out in close partnership between the Commission, the team of peers (civil protection experts and practitioners selected for the specific review), and the relevant authorities of the country under review.
