Description

On 26 March, the European Commission adopted the Preparedness Union Strategy (PUS). This strategy is the EU’s first comprehensive preparedness approach across different policy areas, governance levels and stakeholders. One of its key principles is taking a whole-of-society approach.

Young people and youth groups play an important role in crisis preparedness and response. For instance, at the beginning of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, the members of the Scout movement were among the first to arrive on the border to help refugees and they helped more than 1.5 million people so far. Similarly in disaster prevention, youth organisations can assist communities in mapping their risks and encourage measures and behaviours to reduce them. When it comes to preparedness, youth play a critical role by sharing messages and helping parents and communities prepare for disasters, for example by developing an emergency preparedness plan.

Speakers during this session included members of the World Scout Movement, the European Commissions Directorate-General for Education, Youth, Sport and Culture and representatives from countries and projects supported by Erasmus+ and the European Solidarity Corps.
