Story collection: Youth in Civil Protection

In celebration of International Youth Day, we are excited to highlight the contributions of young researchers who attended the 3rd International Conference on Natural Hazards and Risks on June 12-13, 2024 in Amsterdam. Supported by the European Commission, this event featured ten Early Career Researchers whose exceptional abstracts in UCPM-relevant research were showcased through posters and presentations. These emerging scholars are at the forefront of innovative research addressing critical issues in natural hazard risk management.

Their work covers a variety of crucial topics, from social vulnerability and flood impacts to forest fire susceptibility, multi-risk assessments, and the evaluation of civil protection exercises. Through their dedication and expertise, these young scientists are providing valuable insights and developing strategies that significantly enhance civil protection and disaster preparedness.

The Knowledge Network actively supports the next generation of civil protection and disaster risk management (DRM) professionals. In alignment with the European Year of Youth, it held the 'Young Civil Protection Professionals Event' (YCPP) in October 2022 and 2023. These events offered young participants the chance to understand the UCPM's structure, delve into evidence-based decision-making during crises, and network with peers and professionals. Participants engaged in simulation exercises and attended workshops on wildfire response management, strategic foresight in DRM, and virtual operations support teams.
